Alberto Viani - visionary sculptor, member of Il Fronte Nuovo delli Arte and beloved mentor and friend of Vittorino Meneghelli. Born in 1906, Alberto attended the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia where he studied his eventual passion for sculpture under the tutelage of Arturo Martini. He began to exhibit his works in 1944 and quickly accumulated international recognition. He presented many times at the Biennale of Venice - in 1952 he received the Venice Award and then the International Award for his sculpture in 1966. Alberto passed away in 1989 yet he is remembered by his many sculptures populating the Italian and many international museums. Alberto also showed a talent for carpentry and designed and built several items of furniture that carried subtle influences of his aesthetic for curvature.

This book is a compilation of the many letters sent to Vittorino Meneghelli whilst in Italy and once he moved to South Africa. It incorporates the unedited scans of the letters to Vittorino, many with pictorials of his design ideas for the sculptures he was planning, along with the typed – and annotated – versions. The notes in between the letters explain more about the history of Alberto and put the letters into context – these notes have been a collaborative work between Vittorino Meneghelli and Eva Viani, the daughter of Alberto. Also included in this book is a foreword by the good friend of Alberto – Wladimiro Dorigo.
